4. Panama City: Enter the Dragon!
Mark Twain once said, “History does not repeat itself, but it does rhyme.” So as time goes by, Panama’s housing boom is increasingly looking like its late American par, the bursting mother of all housing bubbles. Boomers looking for well-balanced information about Panama will find out rather promptly that it is one very scarce commodity these days. The wizards of R.E.A. (a.k.a. real estate advertising) and their well-off Maecenas have managed to create, out of a country that could be beautiful indeed, a three-headed Dragon (developers, brokers and profiteers) that can devour almost anything crossing in its path.

“The future of tourism in Panama and the World” was the theme for this year’s 7th annual International Tourism Forum, which took place on Sept. 19 at the InterContinental Playa Bonita Resort. The Forum, hosted by the Panama American Chamber of Commerce (PanAmCham), was designed to allow tourism professionals in the country to learn from sustainable models of tourism at home and abroad. This year’s feature speaker was Rohit Talwar, a market expert and futurist from London, who discussed trends in the world tourism business and how they relate to Panama’s situation in the world market.

7. A Modern-Day Panamanian Invasion
If you've been reading the A-Letter, you know the Republic of Panama is one of our favorite tax havens. A stand out among current offshore tax havens, Panama combines maximum financial privacy, a long history of judicial enforcement of asset protection friendly laws, strong anti-money laundering laws, tax exemptions for foreigners and, due to its unique historic relationship with the United States, a high degree of independence from outside pressures, including those from Washington, D.C.

9. A Gentleman’s Farm In Panama
In February I had the opportunity to visit Panama for the first time. I’ve spent most of my life in the Pacific Northwest and had never been to the tropics. Although I was warned about humidity, pests, lack of services – I found none of these. Instead, the Panama I found was pleasant, welcoming and abundant. Panama was a revelation – modern and industrious, a slower, quieter pace, and growth with more space to grow. I observed that the amount of undeveloped land in comparison to the population is about the same as in Oregon or Washington. Yet it seemed obvious to me that Panama with its acres of land skirting the Caribbean and the Pacific is nothing like the over-priced, over-taxed and over-crowded place where I was from.

10. Panama During the Rainy Season
After reading many articles on moving to Panama, one item kept coming up. Rain. Living in Tucson, Arizona, one is not used to daily rain. It seemed wise then to visit during the rainiest part of the year, figuring if we liked it then, we would love it during dry season. What we didn't count on was the cold. For three months prior to the trip I read all the information I could find on the web
